National Pension System (NPS) is a government-backed voluntary retirement savings scheme regulated by PFRDA. It offers market-linked returns and tax benefits under Section 80CCD(1B).
NPS contributions are eligible for deduction up to ₹1.5L under 80C and an additional ₹50,000 under 80CCD(1B). On maturity, 60% corpus withdrawal is completely tax-free.
Tier I is the mandatory pension account with withdrawal restrictions and tax benefits. Tier II is a voluntary savings account with full flexibility to withdraw anytime, but no extra tax benefit.
For Tier I, the minimum contribution is ₹1,000 per year and minimum ₹500 per transaction. For Tier II, the minimum is ₹250 per contribution with no annual minimum.
At age 60, you can withdraw 60% of the corpus as a lump sum (tax-free) and must use at least 40% to purchase an annuity for monthly pension. Partial withdrawals are allowed after 3 years for specific purposes.
NPS offers Auto and Active investment choices. Under Active, you can allocate across Equity (E), Corporate Bonds (C), Government Securities (G) and Alternative Assets (A). Equity exposure is capped at 75% till age 50, then gradually reduced.
NPS offers higher potential returns through equity exposure and an extra ₹50,000 deduction. EPF offers guaranteed returns and full corpus tax-free on maturity. A combination of both often provides the best retirement corpus.
