What is F&O?

Understanding Futures & Options Trading

Futures and Options are powerful derivative instruments that allow you to trade on the future price of an asset — without owning it. They offer leverage, hedging, and profit opportunities in both rising and falling markets.

Derivative Instrument

Futures Contract

A legally binding agreement to buy or sell an asset at a predetermined price on a specific future date. Both buyer and seller are obligated to fulfil the contract.

Obligation to Execute

Both parties must buy/sell at the agreed price on expiry date

High Leverage

Control large positions with smaller margin requirements

Index & Stock Futures

Trade NIFTY, BANKNIFTY, or individual stock futures

Example

Buy NIFTY Dec Futures at 24,750 — profit if NIFTY rises above 24,750 by expiry

VS
Derivative Instrument

Options Contract

A contract giving the buyer the right, but not obligation, to buy (Call) or sell (Put) an asset at a specific price before or on the expiry date.

Right, Not Obligation

Buyer can choose to exercise or let the contract expire

Limited Loss Risk

Maximum loss for buyer is the premium paid upfront

Call & Put Options

Profit from bullish (CE) or bearish (PE) market movements

Example

Buy NIFTY 24800 CE — profit if NIFTY rises above 24,800, max loss = premium paid

Strike Price

The fixed price at which the option can be exercised — the reference point for all options strategies

Expiry Date

The date on which the F&O contract expires. NSE has weekly (Thursday) and monthly expiries

Premium

The price paid to buy an option contract — the maximum a buyer can lose on any trade

Lot Size

F&O contracts are traded in fixed lot sizes — e.g., NIFTY lot = 25 units, BANKNIFTY lot = 15 units

Open Interest

Total outstanding contracts in the market — a key indicator of market sentiment and liquidity

Hedging

Using F&O to protect your existing portfolio from adverse market movements — like buying insurance

Risk Disclosure — F&O Trading

Futures & Options trading involves substantial risk and is not suitable for all investors. Leverage in F&O can amplify both profits and losses significantly. Read all related documents carefully before trading. Past performance is not indicative of future results.

F&O contracts carry high market risk due to leverage. A small adverse movement in the underlying asset can result in losses greater than the margin deposited.

Options buyers risk losing the entire premium paid. Options sellers/writers carry unlimited loss potential and must maintain adequate margin at all times.
